Hmm - as I learn more about Prop 8

the more I'm disgusted.

So it's mainly the Mormons who supported the ban on it. And quite frankly black people.

So let me get this straight.

It's okay to have children wives.

It's okay to have multiple wives.

below the belt comment in 5-4-3-2-1

It's okay to have hundreds of children go into state care because the children are subject to underage sexual acts. BUT it'd be terrible for a same-sex stable couple to adopt a child that needs parental care.

It's okay to oppress a group of people. Despite the fact that you lived the most ultimate form oppression in the form of slavery...where you were property, no better than cattle or horses.

But it's not okay for two consenting adults to choose who they love? And have that love recognized, validated and protected.

Ain't that some bullshit?

Call me liberal, but I don't believe who you are attracted to is a choice. Why would somebody chose to not be able to have basic rights and respect? Society can be such an effed up place at times. That's like me saying, you know what? I choose not to get paid for the hard work I do...I'm black and my right to be considered a human being instead of property should be taken away from me.

Sunfresh, I don't think your opinions are about being liberal, rather I think the issue is one of equality pure and simple. Our constitution does not base equality on religion therefore people's religious views should have nothing to do with what is deemed legal in this country. On the other hand, I do realize that the separation of church and state was not always apparent in the legal formulations of this country.

When I was in college back in 93-97, I remember debating the issue of gay marriage. At that time I remember being offended that this was compared to the civil rights movement but my primary opposition was that at that time, there was a huge conflict in the gay community over this issue. Now that this is something that seems to be supported by the gay community and they are willing to fight for it just as black people were willing to fight during the civil rights movement, I am far more comfortable with the comparison. Frankly, I really hope someone challenges this and the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the issue.
